A student died in northeast Colombus this Monday. According to the police report, Jeremiah Harper (17 years-old student) was shot near his house, on the Duxberry Avenue, at around 12:50 p.m. He later died at State University's Wexner Medical Center due to the injury caused by the shooting.
Sadly, shootings are not so rare lately. People are getting more and more paranoid, and for a reason: more people die every month due to shootings. The police was called by a young man who identified himself as a friend of Harper. Apparently, this friend of his lived nearby Harper's home and could hear the gunshot from his own house. He claimed to instantly start running towards Harper's house, not sure what to expect. She found Harper with a gunshot in his chest. He was still alive, and moving, but could not speak.
His neighbors heard him screaming he was shot. Harper tried to get into his house after the shooting. He managed to go down to his basement and later collapsed on the floor. He must have been scared of a second shoot, because he seemed to be hiding from his aggressor. There was no sight of the murderer whatsoever right after Harper was found.
A 45-years-old woman also ran out of her house, because she was alarmed by Harpers screams. The Linden-McKinley Stem Academy was locked down for a period of time after the shooting. All the activities were cancelled as a precaution.
His friends and family are devastated. Harper is described as a very kind and calm young man. He would not get into trouble and was very loved by all those who were around him. He was just a really good person in the wrong place, at the wrong time. The injustice caused great pain in his beloved ones.
Police later found a suspect. A 19-years-old man was arrested and accused of the shooting death of Jeremiah Harper. They suspect they had some sort of argument before he pulled out a gun and fired a single bullet into Harper's chest. There is not much information on the reasons why he became so violent to shoot Harper.
Apparently, Harper and his murdered were close friends. The 19-years-old had two family member losses earlier this year (his grandmother and aunt) and he seemed to be very down. This might have been a trigger for his extreme behavior. The murder's family is also very surprised, in a complete state of shock and feels great pain for Harpers death. No one could have predicted the shooting to happen, they claim.
A poor young man with his whole life in front of him. Many investigators are trying to find out why Harper's friend would do what he did. Many people are being interrogated at the moment to accomplish that. Hopefully more information will be released shortly, to get to the bottom of this incredibly big injustice. May Jeremiah Harper rest in peace. All our prayers are with his family and friends.
